Turn the Wheels of Freedom

48"L by 36"H by 24"D
Whirligig circa late 19th century

This piece was created to reflect on Lincoln's dream of the fifteenth Amendment, which became law on March 30, 1870. For the African American land ownership, legal marriage, religious liberty, and citizenship were all made possible because of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

As you turn the wheels, life is set in motion. Abe Lincoln moves back and forth holding the harness of his devoted horse "Old Bob" which rocks up and down. The couple’s arms also move up and down in harmony, sharing new freedoms ushered in by the Fifteenth Amendment.

Handcrafted from multiple pieces of antique heart pine salvaged from a barn located in Upstate, NY circa early 1890. A pair of antique wooden spoke wheels salvaged from a goat cart is used for the buggy. Iron and copper is cold worked and formed to areas of the piece for movement. A salvaged horse harness was incorporated as well. Red, black, yellow and gray buttermilk paint is applied in numerous layers to give the appearance of a time worn finish. Piece is mounted on a wooden base for display.

The piece is sold but special commissions are welcomed.
