Girl in Red Dress with Cat

25" High
Papier-mâché head doll based on 1834 primitive portrait

This doll and her white muslin cat are inspired by the famous 1834 portrait "Girl in Red Dress with her Cat and Dog" by the itinerant Connecticut artist Ammi Phillips. The doll's papier-mâché bust is from a mold made from a rare c. 1840 handmade wooden model doll head Christine acquired in Maine. The girl's dress is of red silk and she wears organdy pantalets and a muslin petticoat. Her stuffed cat is of white painted muslin and is made to resemble the girl's cat in the portrait, which hangs in the American Museum of Folk Art in New York.
